Running Unconventionally: Alternative Energy Sources for Cars
It’s definitely about money
The oil producers want more money for crude oil, so the oil companies charge more for the refined product. As we looked on in amazement a few months ago, increasing prices of petroleum products were experienced almost throughout the world.
At the end of the line we, the consumers, would like to pay less for it. In many large countries like the USA, Canada and Australia we cover long distances in our cars because public transport cannot keep up with the urban sprawl. Using your own vehicle to commute has become a necessity.
With the increasing money being spent at the pump, we are looking to alternative energy to power our vehicles. Continual research is to be encouraged because that can eventually lead us to lower running costs.
When talking about alternative fuels, we generally mean cars or other vehicles running on fuel other than gasoline or diesel. Certainly in recent years we have seen cars running on electricity, hybrids that run on a combination of gasoline and electricity, even solar powered cars. There’s even a do it yourself system where a car can use water to supplement the gas through water-to-gas technology.
There are several reasons for the rise in popularity of alternative fuels
1. The recognition of greenhouse gases being bad for the environment, which has lead to ever tightening environmental laws.
2. The ever increasing taxes on fuel, particularly in Europe.
3. The reliance on burning fossil fuels that produce carbon dioxide. These resources will not last indefinitely, they will run out.
4. The continual addition of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which leads to rising temperatures that result in global warming and climate change.
Alternative fuels currently available
There are at present cars capable of running on solar power, ethanol, hydrogen, LPG, fuel cells and compressed air. Also there are still what we call hybrid cars that can run on gasoline and electricity.
Exploring alternative energy sources for cars is a way of adapting to the increasing cost of fuel and taking active steps in resolving environmental concerns.
